KEEN (Kids Enjoy Exercise Now) is a University of York ratified sports session for children aged between 3-11 with a variety of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

We are run by The University of York Student Union (YUSU), with direction and organisation coming from a student committee. We ask all our volunteers to be DBS and ‘Safeguarding Children’ checked, further to this, all our committee are Makaton and Paediatric First Aid Level 1 qualified.

Our sessions run every Sunday throughout university term time between 1-2 pm in the Dance Studio of the Heslington West Sports Centre at the university. These sessions include running races, parachute games, musical statues/bumps as well as other playground classics (‘Duck, Duck, Goose!’ etc.). We embrace the choices of the children and allow them input into the direction of our sessions as to fully encompass the fun and enthusiastic nature of the KEEN name. Towards the end of term, we have special sessions such as swimming trips, sports days and go karting, which have been a real hit with both the children and volunteers… (as well as the parents!!).

We fully believe in the notion that ‘anything is possible’ and so we work towards the destruction of barriers that prevent individuals with SEND getting involved with sports. Through sports we aim to increase the confidence, communication and fine motor skills of our children, within the safety of a familiar and loving setting.
